Description
With your best bass voice, slowly say the word "Dromogomphus". The Flag-tailed Spinyleg, the only one of the genus found in our state, is one of our great dragonfly predators. This large and long-legged critter sits quietly on a perch, watching for the unsuspecting butterfly, or even another dragonfly, to fly too close for comfort. Its wide, rusty club makes it easy to see as it hunts at the edges of lakes and ponds of southern Iowa.
